6 volumes in elaborately decorated dark brown cloth. Front cover with gilt griffin and coat of arms with the motto "Fide et Virtute" (by fidelity and valour) Borders and corners ornately stamped with a black foliar pattern, the same frames also to back covers, stamped lettering and decoration in black & gilt to spines also. All page edges are gilt. Profusely illustrated throughout. No date, circa 1891, the books cover Gladstone's life up to 1890. Each Volume has a beautiful full page frontispiece with tissue guard, different in each volume, opposite handsome title page printed in red and black. Gladstone is the frontispiece in Volume I which also contains 94 woodcut illustrations in text including plates. Vol II has 103 illustrations, Vol III has 99, Vol VI has 101, Vol V has 120 and Vol VI has & 80 illustrations. Volume VI also includes the general index. The whole set is a comprehensive biography unequalled before or since in detail and quality of illustration. The condition inside and out is fine with no loss, wear or damage. On the front blank endpaper in each volume is a label pasted in on one edge only from the punlisher "This edition being specially prepared for subscription, is not obtainable through general booksellers" Cassell and Company, Limited 10119
